Mikrogeophagus is a genus of small cichlids native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America Both species are popular with aquarists, especially M. ramirezi.
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, is a species of freshwater fish endemic to the Orinoco River basin, in the savannahs of Venezuela and Colombia in South America. The species has been examined in studies on fish behavior and is a popular aquarium fish, traded under a variety of common names, including ram, blue ram, German blue ram, Gold Ram, among others. It is a suitable companion fishes should be selected keeping in mind that these are not robust cichlids and will fail to thrive in the company of fast, greedy feeders or overly aggressive fishes. Some of the best companion fishes include rummy-nose tetras, hatchetfishes, pencilfishes and some of the more warth-loving Corydoras species.
