Guppies & Endlers

Guppy, (Poecilia reticulata or Lebistes reticulatus), colourful, live-bearing freshwater fish of the family Poeciliidae, popular as a pet in home aquariums. The guppy is hardy, energetic, easily kept, and prolific.

The male guppies usually have round tails that can be of different lengths. This makes it very easy to tell the males apart. It is a bit more tricky with the females. Generally, the female Endlers will have a small transparent tail whereas the guppy females have larger tails with a little bit of color on them.

Interestingly enough, Endler's livebearers are part of the Poecilia genus, which is the same genus as mollies and guppies. From a genetic standpoint, the fish is the same as the common guppy. But, it was given its own scientific name for conservation purposes.
